The default WooCommerce search looks in product titles and content only. It has no fuzzy matching, no visual results, and slows down as your catalog grows. You can easily fix all of these limitations and improve your WooCommerce search through Elevated Product Search’s indexing, expanded search scope, instant AJAX results, and typo-tolerant matching.
Default WooCommerce search ignores SKUs, product attributes, and custom fields. Customers who remember a part number or specific attribute value get no results.
With Elevated Product Search enabled, you can improve WooCommerce search by making these fields fully searchable alongside titles and descriptions.
Navigate to Elevated › Product Search › Settings › Advanced Options.
Look for the Search Scope panel.
Toggle SKUs to ON to allow searches by partial or complete product SKU values.

Toggle Attributes to ON to include product attributes in search results.
For custom fields (such as those created with Advanced Custom Fields or Meta Box), enter the field keys in the Custom Fields input. Separate multiple fields with commas.
Click Save Settings.
The indexer automatically includes the new product data within seconds. You can test by searching for a known SKU on the frontend of your site.
Native WooCommerce product search requires exact matches. A customer searching for “shoes” when your product is listed as “shoe” gets no results. Improving WooCommerce search means adding fuzzy matching to handle typos, plurals, and similar terms.
Navigate to Elevated Product Search › Settings › Advanced Options.
Look for the Fuzzy Matching section.

Click the Match Strictness dropdown and select your preferred level:
Click Save Settings.
Test the behavior by searching for intentional typos on the frontend of your store (for example, “wirelss” instead of “wireless”).
Default WooCommerce search requires the customer to submit the form and wait for a full page reload. Elevated Product Search displays results instantly as the customer types.
The live product search behavior is active automatically when you use the [elex_product_search] shortcode. No additional configuration is required.
To verify, visit a page with the WooCommerce search form and type slowly. Results appear 300 ms after you stop typing, without a page reload.

Native search only searches product titles and content. Elevated Product Search lets you set exactly which product data to search.
Navigate to Elevated › Product Search › Settings › Advanced Options.
Look for the Search Scope panel.
Toggle individual fields to include or exclude them from the search:

Each toggle adds or removes that data source from the product search index. When you change these settings, click Save Settings, and the indexer automatically rebuilds to include the new scope.
Native search results are text-only links. Elevated Product Search displays product images, prices, and add-to-cart buttons directly in the dropdown, with an optional detailed product preview.
Navigate to Elevated › Product Search › Settings.
Look for the Display Options section under Results Area.

To enable the detailed product preview panel shown on the right side of the dropdown, expand the Product Preview section and toggle Show Product Preview to ON.

Click Save Settings.
The Preview panel shows a visual mockup of how your search form and results will appear.
Native WooCommerce search runs database queries on every request. With 1,000+ products, this creates significant server load and slow response times. Elevated Product Search uses a dedicated search index to maintain speed regardless of catalog size.
Navigate to Elevated › Product Search › Settings.
Scroll to the Indexer section at the bottom of the page.

For catalogs with over 10,000 products, enable Index Schedule to keep the index updated automatically. Toggle Index Schedule to ON and select your preferred update frequency.
If you recently added products or changed searchable fields, click Force Index Rebuild to refresh the entire index. A success message appears indicating how many products were indexed.
The index stores searchable text fields in an optimized format, not full product data. This keeps queries fast even with 50,000+ products.
Native WooCommerce search uses standard WordPress WP_Query with s parameter. This queries the wp_posts table directly, scanning title and content columns with LIKE SQL operations. Several limitations result from this architecture:
No indexed data: Every search scans raw database tables. With 10,000 products, a single search might look at 10,000 rows. Scale this to concurrent users, and server load increases dramatically.
Exact match requirement: The database LIKE operator finds substrings but cannot handle typos or word variations. “Red shoe” and “red shoes” are treated as entirely different queries.
Single table constraint: SKUs live in wp_postmeta, attributes in separate taxonomy tables. Native search joins are complex and slow, so WooCommerce excludes them entirely.
No result enrichment: Building a preview with images, prices, and cart buttons requires additional queries per result. Native search avoids this to prevent timeouts.
Elevated Product Search solves these by maintaining a separate search index in dedicated database tables. When products update, the indexer extracts searchable text, normalizes it (handling plurals and variants), and stores it in an optimized format. Searches query this index rather than core tables, allowing fuzzy matching, expanded scope, and millisecond response times regardless of catalog size.
