The indexer extracts searchable text from your WooCommerce products and stores it in an optimized format. When a customer types in the search form, the query runs against this index rather than the WordPress database directly, which produces faster results. The indexer rebuilds automatically when you save settings, and you can monitor its status or trigger a manual rebuild anytime you want.
Navigate to Elevated › Product Search › Settings.
Expand the Advanced Options panel on the left and scroll to the bottom to find the Indexer section.

This section contains the controls for managing your search index.
The indexer pulls data based on your Search Scope configuration. It only extracts and stores text from the fields you have enabled.
Navigate to Elevated › Product Search › Settings › Advanced Options › Search Scope.

The indexer includes:
Fields toggled to OFF are skipped entirely during indexing. If you enable a new field, the indexer must rebuild before that data becomes searchable.
The indexer rebuilds automatically when you click Save Settings at the top of the settings page.
Make a small change to verify this behavior. For example, adjust the Max Results slider in the Results Area section.
Click Save Settings.

A success message appears indicating how many products were indexed. This confirms the rebuild has been completed.
The index stores searchable text in a dedicated format separate from your WordPress product tables. When a customer searches, the plugin queries this index instead of running live database lookups against wp_posts and wp_postmeta. This separation is what allows search results to return in milliseconds, even with tens of thousands of products.
The amount of data stored in the index depends on your Search Scope. Enabling descriptions, custom fields, and attributes increases the index size because more text is extracted per product. Product images, gallery data, and non-text metadata are never stored in the index. Only the text fields required for matching are kept.
The index rebuild process runs in the background. For small catalogs, it completes within seconds. For larger stores, the process uses batched loading to avoid overwhelming server resources. During a rebuild, search functionality remains available using the existing index until the new data is ready.
Automatic rebuild handles most situations, but there are cases when you should trigger a manual rebuild.
If you have just imported products, updated stock statuses outside of WooCommerce, or made bulk changes to product data through an external tool, the automatic rebuild may not catch every change. In those cases, a manual rebuild ensures the index reflects your current catalog.
To rebuild manually, click Force Index Rebuild in the Indexer section. The process shows real-time progress and displays a success message when finished.
For step-by-step instructions, see How to Force Rebuild the Search Index.
If you want the index to stay current without manual intervention, you can enable automatic scheduled updates. For configuration details, see How to Schedule Index Updates.
Search returns no results for newly added products
If you added products and they do not appear in search, the index may not have updated. Click Force Index Rebuild in the Indexer section and test again.
The index success message shows fewer products than expected
Check your Search Filters settings. If you are excluding out-of-stock products or filtering by specific categories, those rules reduce the number of indexed products. The success message reflects only the products that met your filter criteria.
