To keep product search fast as your catalog grows, reduce the amount of data the indexer processes and the size of each response. Enable only the fields you need in Search Scope, lower Max Results, increase Minimum Characters, exclude out-of-stock products, and set a rebuild schedule that matches your update frequency.
The indexer extracts text from every field enabled in Search Scope. More fields create a larger index with more text to search on each query.
Navigate to Elevated › Product Search › Settings › Advanced Options › Search Scope.

Toggle to OFF any fields your customers do not need to search. For example, if your store does not use SKUs as a customer-facing identifier, disable SKUs. If product descriptions are long and rarely contain useful search terms, disable Description and rely on titles, attributes, and tags.
Click Save Settings. The indexer rebuilds automatically.
The Max Results slider controls how many products appear in the live dropdown before the customer must click See all products.
On the same page, expand the Results Area and look for the Max Results slider.

Set it to the lowest number that still serves your customers. A lower limit means less product data, images, and pricing information rendered on every keystroke.
Click Save Settings.
The Minimum Characters slider controls how many characters a customer must type before the search form sends an AJAX request.
On the same page, expand the Basic Settings panel and look for the Minimum Characters slider.

If it is set to 1 or 2, the form queries the index on almost every keystroke. Increasing it to 3 or 4 reduces the total number of requests sent to your server while the customer types.
Click Save Settings.
Products marked as out of stock are still indexed by default. Removing them reduces the total index size.
On the same page, expand the Advanced Options and look for Search Filters.

Toggle Exclude Out of Stock Products to ON.
Click Save Settings. The indexer rebuilds to exclude out-of-stock items.
Manually rebuilding the index on a 10,000-product catalog consumes server resources. Scheduling rebuilds during low-traffic hours distributes that load more evenly.
On the same Settings page, expand the Advanced Options panel and look for the Indexer option.

Toggle Index Schedule to ON and select a frequency that matches how often your catalog changes.
For stores with frequent updates, daily is appropriate. For static catalogs, weekly may be sufficient.
Click Save Settings.
Search feels slow after adding products
Review your Search Scope. If you recently enabled descriptions, SKUs, or custom fields, the index has grown. Disable fields you do not need, exclude out-of-stock products, and force a rebuild.
The index rebuild takes too long
For very large catalogs, the rebuild is intentionally batched to avoid server overload. Enable Index Schedule and let it rebuild incrementally on a schedule instead of forcing large rebuilds during peak traffic.
Reducing Max Results did not improve speed
Max Results controls response payload, not query execution time. If query speed is the issue, focus on reducing Search Scope and excluding out-of-stock products to shrink the index itself.
