WooCommerce Product Search Bar Not Working

If your WooCommerce product search bar is not displaying or returning results, check the shortcode placement, confirm the indexer has processed your products, verify at least one searchable field is enabled in Search Scope, and rule out JavaScript conflicts or caching issues.

Table of Contents

Step 1: Verify the Shortcode and Placement

Confirm the search form is placed using the correct shortcode. Open the page, widget area, or template where you added it.

Check for typos in the shortcode. It must read exactly:

[elex_product_search]
Gutenberg editor with Shortcode block containing the shortcode

If you are using a block theme, verify you added a Shortcode block and did not paste the text into a Paragraph block. If you are using a classic theme or page builder, verify you used the builder’s dedicated Shortcode element.

Visit the frontend page where the form should appear and confirm the input field is visible. If the page shows the raw shortcode text instead of a form, the shortcode is not being executed.

Step 2: Check the Indexer Status

Navigate to Elevated › Product Search › Settings, expand the Advanced Options panel, and scroll to the Indexer section at the bottom of the page.

Indexer section settings showing Force Index Rebuild button and Index Schedule toggle

If you recently installed the plugin or changed Search Scope settings, the index may be incomplete or missing. Click Force Index Rebuild and wait for the success message. Then test the search form on the frontend again.

Step 3: Review Product Search Scope Settings

In Elevated › Product Search › Settings › Advanced Options, scroll to the Search Scope section.

Save Settings button highlighted

Product titles are always indexed and cannot be disabled. However, if you previously disabled every other field and removed all custom fields, the search will still work for titles. If no products have meaningful titles or if the indexer failed, the form will appear empty.

Confirm that the fields you expect customers to search are toggled to ON. After making changes, click Save Settings and allow the indexer to rebuild.

Step 4: Check Your Browser Console for JavaScript Errors

The live dropdown requires JavaScript. If a script error blocks execution, the form may appear but fail to respond when you type.

Right-click the page with the search form and select Inspect or Inspect Element. Open the Console tab.

Check your browser console

Look for red error messages that mention elevated, elex, or ajax. Note any errors and check whether they originate from another plugin or your theme. If you see errors, proceed to Step 5 to isolate the source.

If your WooCommerce search bar is not working and fails silently with no console errors, or if the page crashes before the form loads, the issue may be a PHP error on the server. Browser consoles do not display server-side errors. To inspect PHP errors without downloading log files via FTP, use a debugging plugin such as WP Debug Toolkit. Its Error Log Viewer reads the WordPress debug.log through a browser interface that functions independently of wp-admin, which is useful if a fatal error has locked you out of the WordPress admin.

Step 5: Test for Plugin Conflicts

A plugin conflict is another common reason your WooCommerce search bar is not working. It can prevent the search scripts from loading or interrupt the AJAX request that fetches results.

Go to Plugins › Installed Plugins in your WordPress admin. Temporarily deactivate all plugins except WooCommerce and Elevated Product Search.

Refresh the frontend page with the search form and test it. If the search works, reactivate your plugins one by one, testing the search after each activation, until you identify the conflicting plugin.

If the issue persists with only WooCommerce and Elevated Product Search active, switch to a default WordPress theme such as Twenty Twenty-Four temporarily and test again. Some themes override WooCommerce templates in ways that interfere with search functionality.

Step 6: Clear Site and Browser Cache

Caching layers can serve stale pages or prevent updated scripts from loading.

If you use a caching plugin (such as WP Rocket, W3 Total Cache, or LiteSpeed Cache), clear the cache from the plugin’s admin panel.

Clear your browser cache or test the site in a private browsing window.

If your host provides server-level caching, clear that cache as well through your hosting control panel.
